NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety - Conversion

The NEBOSH National Construction Certificate is for Supervisors, Managers and CDM co-ordinators within the construction industry who are required to ensure that activities under their control are undertaken safely, and for those concerned with the management of buildings who may need to ensure that contractors are working safely.

The qualification is also appropriate for supervisors and managers working in other industries such as utilities, and even broadcasting, where temporary workplaces are a feature of their activities.

The Conversion course is aimed at those who already hold the NGC1 Management of Health & Safety Certificate (NGC1 is a module within the National General Certificate).

The NEBOSH National Construction Certificate consists of three units, each separately assessed:

NGC1 Management of health and safety - A pre-requisite for this course

NCC1 Managing and controlling hazards in construction activities

NCC2 Construction health and safety practical application.

Learning Objectives

The course covers a broad range of construction hazards and the means by which they can be controlled. It includes the main legal requirements relating to construction work and enables students to undertake effective safety inspections on a construction site. The content has been revised in line with the new Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.


Delegates must have passed the NGC1 Certificate within the past 5 years.

• Construction law and management
• Construction site - hazards and risk control
• Vehicle and plant movement – hazards and risk control
• Musculoskeletal hazards and risk control
• Work equipment - hazards and risk control
• Electrical safety
• Fire safety
• Chemical and biological health hazards and risk control
• Physical and psychological health hazards and risk control
• Working at height - hazards and risk control
• Excavation work and confined spaces – hazards and risk control
• Demolition and deconstruction - hazards and risk control

Unit NCC2 Construction health and safety practical
Identify hazards, evaluate risk and control measures with a written report to Management.

Exams & Certification

Unit NCC1 ia a taught unit assessed by a two-hour written examination.  The written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory.   Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

Unit NCC2 is assessed by a two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate's own workplace to test the application of taught health and safety principles in a construction workplace. The assessment must normally be taken within 14 days of a written examination.  The practical examination is internally assessed by the course provider and must be marked by an experienced and qualified safety professional.

Candidates will be awarded a unit certificate for each unit passed. Once a candidate has successfully completes all three units, the overall qualification parchment will be issued.
