Health & Safety Management Jobs – Average Salary £46,000

The average salary for Health and Safety management jobs is now £46,000 though there is considerable variation by sector. There is a growing expectation that job candidates will hold NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications.

The annual Jobs Barometer is based on a survey of all nationally advertised health and safety positions in February and March 2015. It is undertaken each year by the National Examination Board in Occupational Health & Safety.

By far the strongest sector for Health & Safety jobs can be seen to be construction and civil engineering


Salaries are also highest in the construction and civil engineering sector.


The Importance of Qualifications

The proportion of  vacancies calling for a NEBOSH Certificate level qualification was up from 33% last year to 38%. Overall, 92% of positions asked for either some form of NEBOSH qualification and/or Membership of IOSH (up by 4% from 88% in 2014).

The NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety has become the base-line qualification for H&S professionals in the UK – and many other countries. It covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge.

Where applicants were required to hold a NEBOSH Diploma qualification, the average top end salary was £49,000. This figure fell to £42,000 when a Diploma was not specified. Overall, 55% of all positions advertised insisted on candidates holding a NEBOSH Diploma, up from 48% last year and 41% five years ago.

H&S Jobs by Region

Over 60% of health and safety jobs advertised were in London and the South East. This strong bias is clearly linked to the strength of the construction industry within this part of the country.
