Getting Started With Kubernetes

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

Kubernetes (k8s) is an open-source system forautomating deployment, scaling, and containerization of applications. Kubernetes provides a cloud-agnostic container orchestration system and is supported by most major cloud providers. In this 2-day hands-on, the Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS) is used as the managed Kubernetes service. You will learn to deploy containerized applications on Kubernetes, and scale those applications to handle dynamic traffic. You also learn how to continuously deploy new application versions in a Kubernetes cluster to provide application updates with no downtime. This course ends with a section on Kubernetes security.

Key features of this Amazon EKS Training:

  • After-course instructor coaching benefit
  • AWS account included during course, providing you with hands-on experience
  • After-course computing sandbox included
  • End-of-course exam included

Who Should Attend

This hands-on course is designed for anyone wanting to learn how to deploy containerized workloads on Amazon EKS.

What is Kubernetes?

Kubernetes (k8s) is an open-source orchestration system that facilitates deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications to run in many different cloud based environments.

What is EKS?

Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS) is Amazon's implementation of Kubernetes. EKS provides a fully managed Kubernetes control plane (master) with the ability to run clusters made up of EC2 instances.

Is Kubernetes a container engine?

No. Kubernetes is a container orchestration system. It still requires a container run-time, such as Docker to actually run the containers.

Does the course cover how to containerize applications?

No. The course provides a brief introduction to containers and Docker, but does not cover how to containerize applications or how to architect applications. The course instead focuses on how to leverage EKS to deploy and manage containers.

Learning Objectives

  • Create and run a Docker container
  • Create Amazon EKS clusters
  • Install and configure kubectl for Amazon EKS
  • Deploy containers to a Kubernetes cluster
  • Perform rolling updates and blue/green deployments of application versions
  • Autoscale the number of running pods
  • Use namespaces and network policies to restrict pod communication

Pre-Requisites

  • Basic understanding of AWS core services, EC2 and VPC.
  • Knowledge at the level of  the Amazon Web Services (AWS) course.
  • Knowledge of containers is helpful but not required.
