BCS EXIN Practitioner Certificate in Agile Scrum

The EXIN Agile Scrum Master is a certification that looks to confirm both skills and knowledge of the Agile framework and Scrum methodology. Agile Scrum is about working together to successfully reach a goal. Agile methodologies are popular approaches in software development and testing are increasingly being used in other areas. Scrum practices include establishing cross-functional and self-managed teams, producing a working deliverable at the end of each iteration or Sprint. This certification focuses on adopting Agile or Scrum in the workplace and taking on the role of Scrum Master.  This Practitioner certificate is concerned with the use of Agile practices in projects, product and software development and the syllabus is designed to ensure the candidate has suitable knowledge of the core concepts of Agile practices, the Agile values and principles, across a breadth of Agile methodologies; it does not solely focus on one specific methodology.

After successfully completing the course and passing the exam, candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to understand, use and explain Agile concepts in the following areas:

  • The Agile way of thinking
  • The Scrum Master role
  • Agile Estimating, Planning, Monitoring and Control
  • Complex projects using Agile
  • Adopting Agile

Who is it for?

The Agile way of thinking is best known in the field of software development, but the principles are increasingly being applied in other types of projects.

Scrum is the most used Agile methodology and is suitable for all professionals looking to keep their knowledge up to date with the latest developments in the fields of IT and Project Management, Test Management and Service Management, particularly those leading or participating in projects. In particular, the certification is suitable for professionals working in an Agile context and who have the ambition to facilitate a Scrum team by assuming the role of Scrum Master or deputy.

Learning Objectives

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of general concepts in the following areas:

Pre-Requisites

Candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of Agile, which can be gained from the BCS EXIN Foundation in Agile or hands-on experience.

Note that it is recommended that you attend an accredited training course run by an accredited training provider, as the overall exam pass rates are notably higher for candidates attending such courses.

Course Content

Candidates will learn the general concepts in the following areas:

Agile Way of Thinking

  • Agile concepts of thinking and how Agility brings predictability and flexibility
  • Continuously improving the process and how to use continuous improvement
  • Recognise other frameworks and methodologies: Waterfall, Crystal, Lean, XP, DSDM, DevOps.
  • Applying Agile principles in IT Service Management

 The Scrum Master Role

  • Responsibilities and commitment detailing: the tasks and responsibilities belong to the Scrum Master role; the solutions suitable for solving problems and the tools to use to facilitate the team
  • Coaching the team and mediating, showing when and how to mediate through conflict, how to coach and challenge the team and the importance of training
  • Other roles within the Scrum framework

Agile Estimating, Planning, Monitoring and Control

  • Writing and maintaining the Product and Sprint Backlog, including a good Definition of Done, Creating and recognising good User Stories, and how to add to and maintain the Product Backlog
  • Agile Planning for Roadmap, Release and Sprint Planning, including iterative planning and the role of the Scrum Master
  • Agile Estimation: when and how to estimate using Story Points, Ideal Hours and Ideal Days, how to guide a planning session, with and without Planning Poker, how to recognise errors in estimation and how to calculate the ROI (Return on Investment)
  • Tracking and communicating progress by: Identifying impediments, deviations, roadblocks and other obstacles that influence progress positively and negatively, how to create Information Radiators, how to interpret them and how to act on the results and the commonly used tracking methods (Burn-Down Chart, Velocity…)
  • Staying in control by managing issues, bugs and informing people outside of the team

Complex projects

  • How to use the Product Backlog in a scaled environment and how to scale to larger teams using Scrum-of-Scrums
  • Suitability of Agile for different types of projects, including the cases in which it is not possible to use Agile and identification of the limits of a Scrum Team
  • Agile administration in tooling and tool integration to help a team to use or adopt Agile and thereby increase the quality of the development process

Adopting Agile 

  • Introducing Agile to understand the project management activities to include in a transition plan, the milestones that are important in that transition and how to deal with resistance to change
  • Self-organisation. What self-organisation means, how project management is shared and what it means to have a cross-functional team
  • Agile requirements and proper environment. The changes in culture that need to be made before adopting Agile and what physical changes need to be made before adopting Agile

Exams & Certification

The exam will be held on the last day of the course in the afternoon.

  • 90 multiple choice questions that consist of a list of possible answers
  • Duration of 180 minutes
  • A candidate must score at least 60% to pass (54/90)

If the examination is taken in a language that is not the candidate’s native/official language, then they are entitled to:

  • 25% extra time.
  • Use their own paper language dictionary (whose purpose is translation between the examination language and another national language) during the examination. Electronic versions of dictionaries will not be allowed into the examination room.
